Legal and Health
ACCESS immigration attorneys provide legal trainings to over 45 organizations in San Diego County each year on the legal protections under VAWA for immigrant victims.By applying under VAWA, victims become eligible to receive:
- Needed health care benefits under the “qualified immigrant status” –a technical term that refers to immigrants who still qualify for health benefits (i.e. full scope Medi-Cal as opposed to emergency medical relief).
- “Qualified immigrant status” was created to maintain a safety net of benefits for battered immigrants to be independent of their abusive spouse.

As such, ACCESS immigration attorneys also provides trainings to advocates and staff of the Health and Human Services Agency of San Diego County to advocate for access to health care benefits preserved after the 1996 Welfare Reform Act. Through these trainings, we aim to help humanize the problems faced by immigrant victims.
